Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

When children or adolescents experience a catastrophic injury, their lives become dramatically altered. The resulting physical or cognitive problem can interfere with numerous aspects of their life. Normal activities of childhood - participating in school, relating with peers and contributing to family life - pose special challenges to children with catastrophic illness or injury.

Franciscan Hospital for Children offers a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program that has comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for children and adolescents who have functional deficits due to catastrophic illness or injury. Focusing on the medical, therapeutic and educational needs of the patient, our program incorporates social development, emotional status and leisure activities into the rehabilitation process.

Our Interdisciplinary Treatment Team

Each patient’s treatment team is personalized to meet the individual needs of the patient and his/her family. The team coordinates an integrated program of medical and rehabilitative care while providing ongoing parent and patient teaching.

Transition Home

From the day the child is referred to Franciscan Hospital, the team begins to plan ahead with the family for discharge. To ensure that the progress made during rehabilitation continues, the rehabilitation team coordinates community support services, including educational, medical, nursing and therapeutic services.
