Speech-Language Evaluations and Treatment
Speech-Language Pathologists are available to provide individualized treatment recommended through the evaluation process. Speech-Language evaluations include:

Audiology Evaluations
The Speech-Language-Hearing department is accredited by the Medicaid Hearing Aid Program, DPH Hearing Aid Program and Hearing Evaluation Program for Infants and Toddlers. Audiologists provide the following services:
- Comprehensive hearing evaluations
- Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) testing
- Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission (DPOAE) testing
- Hearing aid evaluation
- Central Auditory Processing (CAP)
- Counseling, advocacy and follow-up
Pediatric Feeding Group
Certified Speech-Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists provide intensive individual therapy within the group setting. The group promotes development of oral motor, sensory and feeding skills. Children are exposed to a variety of oral motor activities, food textures and sensory play. The program offers:
- Ongoing feeding evaluations
- Peer interaction
- Group feeding therapy
- Parent Training
- Home therapy program
- Multidisciplinary support and referral
Augmentative Communication and Assistive Technology Team
A child who has difficulty communicating due to severe disorders of speech-language production and/or comprehension can gain increased independence for active participation and engagement with augmentative/alternative communication systems and assistive technology equipment.
A Speech-Language Pathologist and Occupational Therapist lead the Augmentative Communication and Assistive Technology Team. Other professionals involved may include an Educational Specialist, Physical Therapist, Psychologist, Audiologist, Reading Therapist, Social Worker, Ophthalmologist, and Physician. The ACAT team:
- Evaluates a child’s current communication skills and needs
- Assesses a child’s physical capabilities and visual/perceptual abilities
- Assists in AAC system design and training for both the AAC user and his/her family members, educational team, and other communication partners
- Monitors the child’s progress
- Assists in identifying funding sources

Referrals are accepted from physicians, parents, public and private schools, therapists and other health agencies/providers. Franciscan Hospital for Children is a provider for most area insurers as well as public and private agencies. Services can be arranged on an individual or group basis.
