Franciscan Hospital for Children Commits to be Tobacco-Free

BOSTON, May 17, 2011 - Franciscan Hospital for Children has joined a state-wide Massachusetts hospital initiative sponsored by the Massachusetts Hospital Association to go tobacco-free. As of June 1, 2011, tobacco use of any kind will not be permitted on the hospital property. This includes the removal of all designated smoking areas outside Franciscan Hospital for Children where patients, visitors and employees currently use tobacco products.

“We are committed to the health and safety of patients, their families and our staff.  After thoughtful consideration, we’ve determined that continued use of tobacco products on and around our facility goes against our mission.” said Franciscan Hospital for Children’s Vice President for Performance Improvement, Jennifer Fexis.  “While we respect the rights of the individual, we must do what we know is best for the children and families we serve.”

Tobacco use in Massachusetts is responsible for more than 8,000 deaths annually and is a major cause of chronic disease and premature death. Using tobacco product on a hospital campus poses a significant health risk to employees, patients and visitors.

Franciscan Hospital for Children is not demanding that tobacco users quit, but this initiative supports our ongoing commitment to healthcare quality and safety
