Brighton (May 3, 2010) – Franciscan Hospital for Children is one of the hospitals being affected by the MWRA’s Boil Water Order. The hospital is taking the water crisis seriously and is following aggressive measures to ensure the safety of our patients, their families and staff.

The hospital administration learned of the Boil Water Order on Saturday afternoon and immediately mobilized a team to review all potential patient risks and administer proper precautions. Drinking water was promptly replaced with bottled water and alternative bathing practices were evaluated. Inpatients at the hospital were assessed individually to determine the best course of care.

Standard practices at Franciscan Hospital for Children minimize the risk to our vulnerable patient population. Staff routinely uses hand sanitizer and all clinical procedures and equipment use sterile water. Additional shipments of bottled water and sanitizer have already been delivered today.

Signage has been posted around the hospital, safety information is being communicated via email and the hospital website has been updated with information about the situation in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Chief Operating Officer, Donna Polselli, said, “We prepare for emergencies regularly as part of our operating procedure. We were able to respond to the water crisis quickly and efficiently thanks to a team effort by the MWRA and our capable staff.
