Moe Maloney

Moe Maloney was born and raised in Brighton, MA, and currently resides in Newton with his wife Marion. Moe attended Saint Columbkille’s School and Saint Sebastian’s prior to receiving his bachelor’s degree from Boston College.

Maloney went on to receive a master’s degree from Boston State College at the age of 21.  Moe was able to continue his lifelong involvement playing sports by transitioning to coaching.

Moe began his 32-year teaching career at Saint Sebastian’s before moving to California to teach in the early ‘60s. Moe soon returned to his roots in Brighton and began teaching eighth-grade in Cambridge at the Morse School where he remained for 29 years. Throughout his teaching career Moe coached basketball at Saint Sebastian’s, Boston State and Matignon High School, and baseball at Mass Bay Community College, Watertown High School, and Bentley College.

In 1988 Moe received the call of a lifetime. He was offered the position as the head coach of the Boston College baseball team—a position that he held for 10 years before retiring. Moe’s experience in teaching and coaching, along with his passion for sports and community service led to a position as the Assistant Director of the Boston College Neighborhood Center.  In this role for the past 11 years, Moe has been able to continue his involvement with the student-athletes promoting the ties between Boston College athletics and community. Maloney and groups of student-athletes visit Franciscan Hospital for Children at least once a month to spend time with kids decorating cookies, shooting hoops, playing board games and cards, and so much more. Moe also serves on the board at the YMCA, sits on the Advisory Board at Horace Mann School for the Deaf, and is very involved with West End House Boys & Girls Club, the Veronica Smith Senior Center, and area schools.

To honor Moe’s dedication to community service the Student Athlete Advisory Committee at Boston College established the Moe Maloney Service Award in 2005. This award is presented yearly to the top male and female athletes in regards to their community service involvement. In 2008 Moe was honored with the Unsung Hero Award from the Healthy Boston Coalition. This distinction acknowledges those in the Allston-Brighton community who have made efforts on their own time for the benefit of the community, above and beyond the call of duty.

Moe and his wife Marion have three children, Ann, Richard, and Kara and are the grandparents of John, 7, Marco, 5, Brenna & Natalie, 3, children of Richard and his wife, Stephanie.
