2003 Franciscan Profile in Children's Courage Award

Joshua Jick

As an intermediate skier, Josh was enjoying ski school and when another child accidentally bumped into him causing him to loose control and hit his head on a tree. Josh had to be airlifted to Primary Children's MedicalCenter in Salt Lake City where he remained in a coma for 2 and 1/2 weeks with a questionable prognosis.

Over a 4-week period, Josh received intensive medical treatment for his head trauma and numerous other complications. He woke up from his coma and recovered enough to safely return to Boston and begin  his rehabilitation at FranciscanHospital for Children.

Josh's Prognosis for recovery was questionable when he arrived at Franciscan. He had limited ability to move his arms and legs and could hardly even sit in a wheelchair. However, he showed tremendous courage and commitment through his rehabilitation. Despite the odds he faced, he was determined to recover and not let anything prevent him from reaching his full potential. Today, Josh is a very lucky happy teenager.
