Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why does my child need rehab?  Why can't we just go home?

Many children who experience traumatic injury, undergo surgery, or  are medically fragile are not ready to go home.  Your child's physician has recomended that he or she come to a rehab facility to receive intense physical, occupational, speech or pulmonary therapy that is not available at the acute care hospital where your child is currently a patient.  At Franciscan Hospital for Children, our mission is to help your child reach his or her fullest potential and help you get home as comfortably and safely as possible.

  • How long will my child be in the hospital?

This is a difficult question for us to answer until we get to know your child. During your first few days here your child wil be evaluated by various specialists.  Once the evaluations are completed, all the clinicians on your child's treatment team will discuss their findings at weekly Rehab or Medical Rounds, and recommend an estimated length of stay.  We will communicate this information to you.

  •   Will I be able to stay with my child?

You are most welcome to stay with your child.  We can accommodate one parent at bedside.  The only exception is if your child is admitted to the Observation Room. In that instance, you may stay overnight in the Family Room.

  • What should I pack for my child?

We encourage our patients to wear their regular clothes whenever possible.  We have found that comfortable t-shirts and sweatpants or shorts work best for children and teenagers.  If your child has a favorite blanket or comforter, you are encouraged to bring this as well.

  • What are the visiting hours?

In general, visiting hours are from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.  If your child is receiving maximum therapies and has a full schedule, we recommend visits later in the afternoon on weekdays.  Saturday afternoons and Sundays are set aside for visiting time as well.

  • Is there parking?

Parking is free.  The Visitor/Outpatient parking lot has reserved parking for parents.

  •  Is there a cafeteria?

The Hospital has a cafeteria that is open Monday through Friday for breakfast and lunch.  If you are staying with your child, we will provide a meal tray for all other meal times.
