Fourth Annual "Salute to Nurses"
Honoring Peggy Smith, Kennedy Day School nurse

On Thursday, May 11, 2006 BostonWorks honored five nurses at a Breakfast Reception held at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston. Peggy Smith, nurse in the Kennedy Day School at Franciscan Hospital for Children, was among the honorees selected for having a profound, positive impact on the lives of their patients. More than 150 nominations were received.

Nominated by her colleague, Patricia Donovan, Peggy was also profiled in the May 7, 2006 supplement to the Boston Globe.

The Nomination Letter reads: "Peggy is the nurse for all 80 students who attend the Kennedy Day School. Most of the students have complex medical needs such as ventilators, management of a tracheostomy, gastrostomy tube feedings, and multiple medications. Peggy provides direct care to the children, handles emergencies, works with families, and communicates with community health care providers to make sure that the special needs of the students are met and they can safely come to school every day.

Peggy also supports the staff through education, problem solving, and teamwork. She is here before the students arrive and after they are gone. Peggy's knowledge of this specialized field and her coordination of services, offer these special children the gift of going to school."
