Lilly Gillan is the kind of nurse every family wants.  She’s warm and professional and would rather ask a clarifying question than make a mistake.  Her attention to detail and commitment to “get it right” reflect her belief that patient and family-centered care are the best way to achieve positive patient outcomes.

For almost her entire nursing career, Lilly has worked at Franciscan Hospital for Children.  Starting out as staff nurse after receiving her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Boston University, she spent time learning how to be a good nurse from more seasoned nursing staff.  Today as Clinical Resource Nurse,  Lilly’s job is to manage nursing staff  during evening shifts in the Inpatient Rehabilitation program.  One of the most rewarding parts of being a nurse leader is in seeing other nurses grow and blossom in their roles.  “My job is to be as positive and motivating as I can in addition to providing excellent patient care.  I enjoy supporting other nurses and teaching them about the clinical details as well as the softer skills that are so important.”

Another of the highlights of her job is seeing patient alumni come back to visit.  “So many of our kids do so well and I love getting the chance to see them again.  Our little patients are a constant reminder to me personally that no matter how unpredictable life can be, there’s always hope.”

As a first generation Chinese-American, Lilly values family and sees the team at Franciscan as an extension of her own.  As a mother of three grown children, one of whom was born prematurely, she can empathize with the challenges many of the families she serves face.  “Every day is a new chance to make a difference for our patients and working together as a team helps us accomplish that.”
